FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) -- Recent winter weather has brought snow and ice to northeast Indiana, leaving roads in need of maintenance in order to keep them safe for travel. While busy thoroughfares are the first to receive attention, roads within hundreds of residential neighborhoods across Fort Wayne are the last to be treated. According to the City of Fort Wayne Street Department, plow trucks will move to residential streets if snow accumulation reaches three inches or more. Plowing residential streets takes roughly two days, and trucks may need to return to busier roads if snowfall resumes. When it comes to salting residential roads, the City of Fort Wayne leaves that for neighborhoods to oversee. A snowy road within a neighborhood in northeast Fort Wayne. An association president or representative is required to submit a written request to have their neighborhood's barrel filled. Trent Hogue, assistant street commissioner for the City of Fort Wayne, said the Street Department fills salt barrels for roughly 40 different neighborhoods across the Summit City. "We go by and we check them out. If they need filled, we'll fill them. If they don't need filled, then we'll check them out again in a couple of days. While Hogue said people unsure about the city's policies reach out to the Street Department any time there is inclement weather, he said city employees work quickly to ensure roads are safe. "We've got over 1,000 miles of main streets, secondary streets, residential streets, [but] we will get to you, especially if there is over three inches of snow," Hogue said. The City of Fort Wayne keeps an online map that shows which of the city's roads are considered "primary" and "secondary" routes, which determines which roads receive treatment first.
