WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) -- President Joe Biden has become known as the "consoler-in-chief," and Monday potentially marked his last chance to act on that while in office. The president and first lady traveled to New Orleans to attend a prayer service and meet with the families of victims from the deadly New Year's terrorist attack. "I've been there. There's nothing you can really say to somebody who's had such a tragic loss," President Biden said ahead of the trip. "My message is going to be personal to them if I get to get them alone. They just have to hang on to each other." The FBI said a U.S. citizen and Army veteran, who was inspired by ISIS, drove into a crowd on Bourbon Street, killing 14 people and injuring dozens more. Police then killed the driver during a shootout. "We established beyond any reasonable doubt that New Orleans was the act of a single man," President Biden said. The president pledged to help the victims' families, along with local and state officials, with whatever they need, and Louisiana's congressional delegation is holding him to that. "What happened in New Orleans could have happened anywhere," said U.S. Rep. Troy Carter (D-La.). Carter joined his Republican colleagues in sending a letter to President Biden, urging him to expedite their state's emergency declaration request. It will surge resources to the emergency services, infrastructure and local businesses impacted by the attack. The New Orleans mayor is also asking for more federal help for the upcoming Super Bowl and Mardi Gras events in her city. "We must stand together, push back against terrorism," Carter said.  Carter said he will also use his position on the House Homeland Security Committee to work to stop future threats, including from inside the U.S. military. "My fear is that we will continue to see more of these lone actors who are out there being radicalized and hoodwinked by the enemy," Carter said.  Other lawmakers have called for congressional hearings into the federal government's investigation.
