Lubbock Fire Rescue gave advice to consider when using alternatives to heat your home. City of Lubbock will announce when emergency warming centers operate LFR tends to see those without heat resorting to alternative ways such as the use of space heaters or fireplaces, but warned "if not done properly, it can pose a great amount of risk and [fire] danger." LFR advised residents to refrain from using extension cords or power strips when plugging in space heaters and keep them at least three feet away from any flammable or combustible materials. Make sure chimneys and vents are regularly inspected and maintained. Never use any form of accelerant, such as gasoline, when trying to use a fireplace.
