Planning for possible winter weather — SCEMD offers downloadable guide with tips

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — In the event of extreme winter weather in the coming days, the SC Emergency Management Division has a severe winter weather guide available for download.
Tips include insulating any exposed pipes with insulation or newspaper, allowing faucets to drip a little during freezing temperatures, and making sure you know how to shut off your water valves in the event a pipe bursts.
Should the power go out, Director Kim Stenson encourages everyone to have an emergency kit ready.
“We recommend everyone have food and water for three days, make sure you have blankets and candles, some kind of battery operated radio so you can stay in touch with what’s going on and that’s very critical,” he says.
And if you must be on the roads during extreme weather, Stenson says keep travel to daylight hours and be sure to pack an emergency kit for your vehicle — including a shovel, blankets, food and water, and necessary medications.
“Stay off the roads, stay indoors as long as you can do that. And that’s probably the number one goal there. And also making sure you check your elderly neighbors and elderly relatives. They’re very susceptible to cold weather and cold weather injuries as are small children. And lastly, don’t forget about pets and livestock during this period as well,” he says.
The severe winter weather guide can be accessed on SCEMD’s website here, or on SCEMD’s mobile app.
