(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A picture can paint a thousand words, and in the fast-paced world of the newsroom, photojournalists play a pivotal role in shaping compelling stories, translating real-world events into impactful visuals, and capturing the experiences of the people involved. FOX21 News Photojournalist Cora Mitchell chases down breaking news, enhances reporter features with visual impact, draws out compelling narratives from interviewees, and edits the parts into a cohesive story - all under tight deadlines. FOX21 Photojournalist Christopher Hernandez followed Mitchell for a day to uncover the work behind the camera lens. "I've experienced a lot of pushback in my life from family, from friends, from partners of mine, and my own self-doubt," said Mitchell. "Sometimes I would call myself my own worst enemy." Mitchell originally wanted to be an author; their interest in storytelling started at an early age. As they grew older and went to school for journalism, Mitchell's passion focused on nonfiction and visual storytelling. "I am, you know, assigned female at birth, I have a Latino background, and I'm queer," said Mitchell. "I feel like those parts of my identity can help inform my storytelling and my journalistic work." "I have to go to whatever breaking news happens and whatever weather conditions that might be," said Mitchell. "I've been in thigh-high snow. I've been in brutal heat. But you have to be prepared for all those different things because news happens anytime, anywhere, with any conditions." "I know that without me, the reporters would be worrying about a lot more things. A lot more mistakes would happen. I don't have to have that shout-out all the time in order to just be part of the team. And that's okay." Starting out in broadcast with no professional experience was at first intimidating to Mitchell but with the support of the team, they've had the chance to grow into the storyteller they are today. "They've given me a chance when I had absolutely no experience and I feel like it's paid off."
