Man held without bond accused of using gun ‘lost’ in Charlotte during liquor store robbery attempt

Indian Land, SC – A 27-year-old Charlotte man is in jail without bond, charged with a violent robbery attempt at a liquor store in Lancaster County, South Carolina.
Deputies say Datarius Vaughn-McHam tried to steal two cases of high-dollar tequila from the Stateline Elite package store on Charlotte Highway in Indian Land on Saturday, January 4, 2025.
According the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, two employees tried to stop him. One tried to physically restrained Vaughn-McHam while the other
blocked his exit.
They say Vaughn-McHam pulled a 9 mm pistol from his pocket.
Investigators say two shots were fired when the suspect and the employees struggled over the gun. Nobody got hit by the bullets.
A customer helped the employees restrain the suspect until a deputy arrived.
Vaughn-McHam is charged with attempted murder, armed robbery, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
The sheriff’s office says the pistol had been reported lost to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in New Year’s Eve.
Vaughn-McHam was wanted by several law enforcement agencies in North Carolina.
