BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- As the Bakersfield Pet Food Pantry approaches its 16th year anniversary, the organization has announced it's closing its doors next month due to a series of problems. Pantry officials say they will be closing the essential service due to a drop in donations and not having enough funds to sign an upcoming lease. From Oildale to the Majors; George Culver’s ‘improbable’ life told in his autobiography "It's just been a tremendous struggle the last 2 years, a tremendous struggle. Try to stay open, fundraising, we've tried all kinds of things," Robin Ackling, Board President, Bakersfield Pet Food Pantry said. "But it just is a little bit every single time. And it's just stepping out on faith too much again this time to sign a 2 year lease when we can't afford it," Ackling added. The pantry could remain open if an organization or donor steps up to the plate with a significant donation. Never miss a story: Make KGET.com your homepage However there is some good news for existing recipients. You have until February 22nd to pick up any emergency pet food. Volunteer, Oshia Hale said, "It's sad because there's a lot of people who's not going to be able to get cat food or dog food, and if they can't get the cat food or dog food, there'll be a lot of stray animals, and then you guys know the pound cannot take dogs or cats right now. So it's gonna be very very sad. There's gonna be a lot of families who lose their pets." If you would like to help save the pet food pantry visit their website, BakersfieldPetFoodPantry.Org, where you can make a monetary donation. A GoFundMe page has also been created to help keep the pantry's doors open.
