Freeze tonight as wintry mix arrives later this week
Jan 06, 2025
AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Early Monday morning Austin recorded it's first freeze since last winter with widespread 20s across the area. This was the second latest first freeze at Austin's Camp Mabry ever recorded.
Sunshine allowed temperatures to rebound into the middle and upper 40s during the afternoon, but the wind continued to make it feel like the 30s most of the day.
Wind speeds will continue to come down this evening, but we'll be in for another hard freeze tonight.
The National Weather Service has issued another Cold Weather Advisory as some may feel wind chills in the 15-20º range by tomorrow morning. It will likely be our coldest morning of the week, but the lack of much wind may make Tuesday morning not feel quite as cold as Monday morning.
Cold Weather Advisory again for Tuesday morning
Aside from cold tonight will start clear, but some scattered high clouds will arrive late evening and overnight. These clouds just may keep temperatures up if they're persistent enough, but it'll still be cold everywhere.
Tuesday should be similar to Monday with mostly sunny skies, a few high clouds and temperatures in the mid to upper 40s. No wintry weather concerns for Tuesday.
Tuesday's forecast
Wintry weather concerns Wednesday-early Friday morning
There is increasing confidence in the possibility of wintry weather between Wednesday through early Friday.
While coverage of wintry mix showers will be spotty during the day Wednesday (20% chance), we expect coverage of precipitation will ramp up Wednesday into Thursday before wrapping up by dawn on Friday.
Wintry Weather Timeline
The temperature profile of the atmosphere (from surface up into the clouds) will be crucial to determining precipitation type.
Right now it appears the Austin Metro will serve as the dividing line between plain rain to the east and an icy mix of rain, freezing rain and sleet to the west. Some snow may mix in as well, but it may be too warm higher in the sky for snow development.
Dominant precipitation type Wednesday night through early Friday morning
The rest of Friday should feature drier weather and slightly warmer temperatures helping us thaw out during the day.
We're still more than 48 hours away from widespread wintry precipitation arriving into Central Texas. We'll continue to gain confidence and share more specifics as we get closer to winter weather arrival.
