New leadership sworn in at Ohio Statehouse

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- New leadership is officially sworn in at the Ohio Statehouse and priorities will be set over the next several weeks.
“I believe that if we work together, our best days are in front of us,” Ohio Senate President Rob McColley (R-Napoleon) said.
Ohio House Speaker Matt Huffman (R-Lima) said one of the first items that will likely be looked at is the state budget.
“We need to see how much money we have, because I think the governor said to me, ‘By the way, Santa Claus is not coming back,’” Huffman said. “We don't have $700 million in the capital budget. We don't have several billion and a variety of other things.”
Some blocked legislation from the past two years — that likely will draw party lines again — may also come up. McColley said one of those things is taking another look at adult-use marijuana policy, while “preserving access.”
“Particularly as it concerns public use, driving while intoxicating, things of that nature,” McColley said.
An overhaul to higher education will be reintroduced after the former Ohio House Speaker Jason Stephens (R-Kitts Hill) blocked it these past two years.
Ohio Senate Minority Leader Nickie Antonio (D-Lakewood) said she is hopeful it still won’t get through, even with support from Republican leaders in each chamber.
“They couldn't get the votes last time with that very extreme as first introduced bill,” she said. “I don't think things have changed in terms of the opinions of the people who pushed back last time.”
While there may be some disagreement this General Assembly, leaders agreed that things will move more smoothly this year than the past General Assembly which was plagued with Republican infighting.
“I suspect we will see things getting through, for better or worse, more quickly, through both chambers,” House Minority Leader Allison Russo (D-Upper Arlington) said.
Leaders said energy legislation is also top of mind for the first few months of this year to ensure Ohio does not run out of energy. Another focus will be property tax legislation but no public plans have been announced for any policy yet.
Committee assignments are still pending, and lawmakers will go on retreats with their caucuses to set agendas and strategies before coming back to Columbus and getting to work.
