Willowick City Council recently awarded Major Waste Disposal the city’s disposal of garbage, recycling and yard waste pickup. According to Mayor Michael Vanni, the contract will commence on Feb. 1. “Major Waste Disposal was the lowest and best bid of the four bids we received,” he said. “This is a five-year contract with a city option to renew for up to five additional years.” There will be no price increase seen in year one for residents who have both garbage and recycling bin pickup, according to Vanni. Recycling will now be picked up weekly, and yard waste will now start on March 1. “All residents should have received a letter from Major Waste Disposal, informing them of the change and asking them to choose their service level,” Vanni said, noting that if there are those who have not received the letter, they can call Major Waste Disposal at 440-254-4929. Vanni said the letter also states how the switch will take place and that City Hall has been receiving calls. “Some were making sure this was not a scam,” he said. “There are three ways to sign up for service. It is pretty easy.” Willowick secures grants throughout 2024 for projects on the horizon Major Waste Disposal has served the Lake County community for more than 40 years. The local business provides services in Mentor, Chardon, Painesville, Leroy, Madison, Perry, Willowick, Willoughby and the surrounding areas in Lake, Geauga, Ashtabula and Cuyahoga counties. According to Vanni, the city is entering the year in a good place financially. However, just like many of the city's neighboring communities, it continues to face rising operational costs. "We have always worked together to face these challenges head-on and to make sure that we are running every department as efficiently as possible for our residents," he said.
