What are DC Snow Emergency Routes?
Jan 06, 2025
WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- The District was in the midst of a snow emergency Monday due to a winter storm.
Not only is parking in Snow Emergency Routes (SERs) strictly prohibited, but doing so can cost you more than a cold commute home.
SERs are indicated by red and white signs posted in D.C.'s larger commercial streets and rush hour streets. The signs are generally posted higher on the pole than other signs.

Officials warn you to avoid driving unless absolutely necessary, and motorists should keep in mind where SERs are while out on the road.
Drivers cannot park on snow emergency routes while the emergency is in effect so that snowplow drivers can clear the streets curb-to-curb. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser's declaration will last until at least Tuesday, Jan. 7.
Vehicles in violation are subject to be ticketed and towed.
Towing tips:
If your vehicle has been towed, you can call the Towed Vehicle Locator office at (202) 541-6083 or check online.
If you were towed by the Department of Public Works (DPW), your car will be taken to the impound lot at 5001 Shepherd Parkway SW. The lot is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. You can call DPW's lot at (202) 645-5500.
Vehicles may also be towed by a private company. You can find where your car has been towed by calling the Towed Vehicle Locator office.
Keep in mind the following fees that must be paid before the vehicle will be released:
$250 ticket for the snow emergency violation
$100 tow fee
$20 per day storage fee
