SAN MATEO COUNTY, Calif. (KRON) -- Highway 1 was closed in both directions Monday morning in Pescadero after a fatal solo vehicle crash, according to the California Highway Patrol. At approximately 1:40 a.m., CHP responded to a report of a vehicle colliding with a tree on Highway 1 north of Bean Hollow Road. Arriving officers found a Toyota Camry split in half. The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. CHP confirmed to KRON4 that the driver was the sole occupant of the Toyota. The identity of the driver has not been released at this time. Two pieces of the car were hauled away on a flatbed truck. The back end of the car was loaded in reverse, showing the car was completely split in two. (Photo: Will Tran)(KRON4) Crash investigators said preliminary information indicates that the driver was traveling north on Highway 1 when the vehicle crossed over double yellow lines to the left before the vehicle veered back right, colliding with a tree on the right shoulder. The cause remains under investigation, CHP said. Dense fog blanketed portions of the Bay Area Monday morning, however, CHP said it was not foggy when they arrived at the scene. Authorities are looking into speed as a factor. Highway 1 was closed for several hours in the early morning before reopening at 5:42 a.m.
