HALF MOON BAY, Calif. (KRON) -- The National Weather Service has issued a beach hazard statement from 4 a.m. Monday through 4 p.m. on Tuesday. The statement was issued due to dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion.
According to the NWS, on Monday and Tuesday, strong rip currents are expected and breaking waves are projected to be up to 20 feet.
Due to the swell, according to NWS, there is an increased risk of sneaker waves.

Sneaker waves are defined by the NWS as potentially deadly waves that surge further up the beach than expected, overtaking the unaware.
The sneaker waves are forecasted along the Pacific Coast, primarily from the coast of Cloverdale to Big Sur.
The weather service reminds beach-goers to keep their pets on a leash and away from the water and never turn their back on the ocean.
