Santa Fe Fire Department reunited with first fire truck

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – It's a piece of Santa Fe history that dates back more than a century. Now, after years of trying to get it back, the Santa Fe Fire Department (SFFD) is once again reunited with their very first fire truck that was used during the early 1900's.
"It's a huge part of our history and we want to preserve that," said Rollin Jones, a fire fighter with SFFD. "It's going to serve as a great way for us to open discussions about this is what firefighting used to look like, and talking about the history of firefighting and some of the big fires we've had in Santa Fe."
The American LaFrance firetruck arrived in Santa Fe in 1918 and was the very first truck used by SFFD. Somewhere down the road, it was sent to Fort Stanton, New Mexico. SFFD firefighter, Rollin Jones, was tasked with returning the vehicle back to its home this weekend. He started the journey at 7am on Saturday, but didn't reach his destination until midnight- after two tires of the vehicle hauling the fire truck blew out.
"We shot off the road at about 60 miles per hour in the middle of nowhere, there's no tire shops anywhere," Jones explained.
Thanks to some volunteers, and help from the Lincoln County Fire Department, the truck was soon back on the road.
"[They] took incredible care of this truck and helped us load everything up," Jones said.
According to Jones, the truck was dropped off at the home of a retired SFFD firefighter in Rio Rancho, who will now work to restore the vehicle, so it is once again street legal.
"It'll mainly be a parade vehicle and a museum vehicle, but it will be fully functional," said Charlie Luster, a volunteer who helped transport the truck.
It is unclear where the fire truck will be stored once it is fixed up.
