SUSSEX, Va. (WAVY) - One man is dead after a single-vehicle crash on Birch Island Road overnight, police said. According to officials, just after midnight, officers were dispatched to the 7300 block of Birch Island Road, just south of Route 604, for reports of a vehicle crash. Officers arrived to the scene and were able to determine the driver of a 2003 Ford F-150, 32-year-old Timothy Lee Tanner, was traveling northbound when he lost control of the vehicle, driving off the road and striking a tree. Tanner was the sole occupant of the vehicle, police said. Birch Island Road crash (Courtesy: VSP) Police said Tanner, who was unrestrained at the time of the incident, was traveling too fast for the icy roadway conditions. Police also found alcohol to be a contributing factor to the crash.
