CLINTON, N.C. (WNCN) — Two people, including a 17-year-old boy, are dead following a late-night crash in Sampson County on Sunday, officials said.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, troopers responded just after 10 p.m. to a crash on Reedsford Road near Byrd-Yancey-Bass Road in the Clinton area.
A 2013 Hyundai was heading west on Reedsford Road at a high speed when it drove off the roadway, smashing into a mailbox and two trees, troopers said.
The driver of the vehicle, later identified as 22-year-old Angel Moises Bonilla Garcia of Clinton, wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and died upon impact, according to NCSHP officials.
Troopers identified the front right passenger in the car as 17-year-old Daniel Vasquez Gonzales of Dunn. He was properly restrained, but was still killed as a result of the crash, officials said.
“Reckless driving and speed are contributing factors in this collision,” according to a Monday news release from NCSHP officials. “Alcohol use is unknown currently.”
Both of the victim’s families have been notified, officials said.
