Winter storm brings snow, ice and gusty winds to parts of the Carolinas
Jan 06, 2025
A powerful low pressure system is impacting the Carolinas bringing a mix of heavy rain, freezing rain, snow and gusty wind to the region Monday. This is causing disruptive travel for the morning commute and could lead to power outages later in the day.
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Ashe and Watuaga County until 7 p.m., and Avery County and the Caldwell County Mountains until 1 p.m. Monday. An additional tenth of an inch of ice will be possible across the mountains with 1-4 inches of snowfall. Snow will pick back up this afternoon with accumulations through the evening.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Catawba, Iredell and Rowan counties until 10 a.m., Alexander, Burke and Caldwell counties until 1 p.m. Monday. An additional glaze to .1″ of ice accumulation will be possible due to freezing rain. This will change back over to a cold rain by mid-morning as temperatures warm above freezing, but icy spots could make travel difficult through early afternoon.
A Wind Advisory will go into effect this afternoon after the cold front passes through the region. Ashe, Avery, Watauga and the Burke and Caldwell Mountains are under the advisory from 3 p.m. until 6 a.m. Tuesday. Winds 20-30 mph with gusts up to 55 mph will be possible. This could lead to downed trees and scattered power outages. The wind will also lead to dangerous wind chills from 0 to -10 above 3,500 feet overnight.
Avoid unnessary travel, especially in areas under Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories. The rain will taper off from west to east this afternoon, but slick spots may remain as temperatures fall back below freezing tonight.
