CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) - Starting January 6th, 2025, personal electronic device use is prohibited during the school day in the Charleston County School District. The South Carolina Department of Education introduced “Free to Focus SC” following the State Board of Education's final approval of a statewide cell phone policy in November. This policy will be implemented for grades Kindergarten through 12. The Department of Education defines personal electronic devices as cell phones, smartwatches, tablets, gaming devices, and accessories like earbuds and headphones. How the policy will be implemented: Devices must be powered off and securely stored throughout the instructional day. Usage is only allowed when explicitly authorized for instructional purposes or required under an Education Plan (IEP), medical plan, or Section 504 accommodation plan. The CCSD Progressive Plan outlines school responses for any student cell phone violations. "We know this change may take some time to adjust, but it is an important step to help students stay focused and make the most of their time at school. Thank you for partnering with us to ensure a focused, distraction-free school experience," said the Charleston County School District website. How will parents and guardians reach their children during the school day for emergencies? The School District said in events of emergencies to contact the school's front office. However, they communicate that students will not be pulled from class for general messages. "We suggest using a student's CCSD email as an alternative way to communicate with your child if needed (high school only). In cases of student illness or emergency, students should visit their school’s Health Clinic to make necessary phone calls," according to the school district.
