Rapper Lupe Fiasco to join the Peabody Institute to teach in its new Hip Hop degree program

Johns Hopkins University’s Peabody Institute is adding rap artist Lupe Fiasco to the faculty of its new four-year program in Hip Hop music.The Grammy Award-winning rapper and record producer announced on social media that he will be joining the Peabody Institute this year.“Thrilled to share that I’ll be joining the faculty at the prestigious John Hopkins University’s Peabody Institute in Fall 2025 as a Distinguished Visiting Professor, teaching Rap as part of the groundbreaking new 4-year Hip Hop Degree Program,” Fiasco wrote on X, formerly Twitter.Lupe Fiasco wears a Johns Hopkins Peabody Institute cap. Photo courtesy Lupe Fiasco/X.The Peabody Institute announced last year that it is creating an undergraduate degree program in Hip Hop music, with associate professor, composer and producer Wendel Patrick serving as director.According to Peabody’s website, the Hip Hop program is designed for rappers, beatboxers, turntablists and producers, and will lead to a Bachelor of Music in Hip Hop degree. Peabody says it will “combine the resources and strengths of Peabody’s industry-leading Music Engineering and Technology programs with the Conservatory’s long history of excellence in performance training.”Fiasco, whose real name is Wasalu Muhammad Jaco, has released nine studio albums, starting with “Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor” in 2006. In 2008, he won a Grammy Award for Best Urban/Alternative Performance for his song “Daydreamin’” featuring Jill Scott.Born and raised in Chicago, he has had 12 songs in the Billboard Hot 100 and two in the top 10, “Superstar” and “The Show Goes On.” He has worked with Kanye West, Snoop Dogg, Pharrell Williams and Jay-Z, among others. His most recent album, “Samurai,” was released last June.In addition to music, Fiasco, 42, has two clothing lines, Righteous Kung-Fu and Trilly & Truly, and he has designed sneakers for Reebok. A martial arts fan, he has a black belt in karate and two black belts in the styles of samurai sword fighting, kendo and aido.Peabody has set Jan. 24 as the deadline for applications for its Hip Hop program.
