The Detroit Lions have booked themselves a playoff bye. With an unknown opponent for the NFC Divisional Round, which team would you rather face? The Detroit Lions took care of business and secured themselves the top seed in the NFC and a first-round bye. Yet while the rest is much-needed, it also means having to wait before their matchup is set.
There are four potential opponents for the Lions in the upcoming divisional round. As the first seed in the conference, they will play the lowest remaining seed—as a result, the Lions cannot face the Philadelphia Eagles (2) or Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3) until the NFC Championship round. Which team Detroit faces all depends on the following:
Los Angeles Rams (4): LAR defeats MIN, TB defeats WAS, PHI defeats GB
Minnesota Vikings (5): MIN defeats LAR, TB defeats WAS, PHI defeats GB
Washington Commanders (6): WAS defeats TB, PHI defeats GB
Green Bay Packers (7): GB defeats PHI
It is difficult to say what the likeliest outcome is. The Rams and Vikings could be a toss-up, since the Rams were the only non-Detroit team to hand the Vikings a loss in 2024. Both the Packers and Eagles have questions about their quarterback’s health, with Jordan Love suffering a hand injury this week and Jalen Hurts still out with a concussion. The Commanders (12-5) look like a favorable matchup against the Buccaneers (10-7), but the Buccaneers enter the playoff on a hot streak and could give the rookie Jayden Daniels trouble in his playoff debut.
Today’s Question of the Day is:
Which team would you rather face in the NFC Divisional Round?
My answer: The Green Bay Packers. It’s easy to say that you want to face the lowest possible seed, but that is not my reasoning here.
The Rams are a tough foe because the combination of Matthew Stafford, Cooper Kupp, and Puka Nacua—that is a dangerous passing attack for even a healthy secondary. The Commanders are also a threat because of Daniels and his mobility and his penchant for wizardry, though I think he will have some rookie hiccups on the big stage.
I think the Lions have had the Packers’ and Vikings’ numbers and I feel favorable playing either team, but I want to face the Packers slightly more. Over the course of the season, Sam Darnold has been a better quarterback than Jordan Love, even after Darnold’s duck against the Lions in Week 18. The Packers could be without receiver Christian Watson, who suffered a non-contact knee injury in Week 18. That leaves the Packers with the receiving corps down to Jayden Reed (blanked by Detroit in Week 14), Romeo Doubs, and Dontayvion Wicks. Even with Detroit putting up a great defensive effort against the Vikings in Week 18, stopping Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison is a tough task—give me the weaker of the two rooms.
The defenses are a close comparison for me. Minnesota has the better defense on paper, but they have also been gutted by the Lions this year, allowing 31 points on both occasions. However, the Vikings have a very talented pass rush with Jonathan Greenard and Andrew Van Ginkel. The duo gave Jared Goff some fits, and a ferocious pass rush opens up the possibility of a Lions turnover. The Lions have a better track record against the Packers pass rush, with Goff getting sacked just twice across both games this season. The offense is at their best when Goff has time to work in the pocket, so I will take any favorable matchup.
