Jan 06, 2025
After making news playingt Washington Square Park, Victor Wembanyama doubles down in a press conference During the Spurs stay in New York, Victor Wembanyama made a trip out to Washington Square Park to play chess.
He initially tweeted inviting challengers to meet and play.
Who wants to meet me at the SW corner of Washington Square park to play chess? Im there— Wemby (@wemby) December 28, 2024
In a Gotham Chess YouTube video, American Chess Master and Gotham Chess host Levy Rozman describes Wemby’s strategy and style.
Rozman runs through the match Wembanyama played against Chess.com’s Product Manager Dylan Rittman. He analyzes the game for strengths and weaknesses, giving somewhat of a play-by-play.
Rozman also named a “starting five” of NBA chess players including Luka Doncic, Jaylen Brown, Dwight Howard, Victor Wembanyama, and Klay Thompson (who used chess in a Kaiser Permanente ad). He also mentions Gordon Hayward, Jaime Jacques Jr., and Derrick Rose as adamant chess players.
The video is about 15 minutes and worth the time if you have even a rudimentary understanding of chess.
During a recent press conference, Wemby was asked about the seriousness of putting together an NBA charity chess tournament. His response was light, yet earnest.
“Of course. If it’s something we take seriously, of course. It’s not hard to make.”
When asked if he was aiming to add this to the All-Star Game, Wemby responded,
“It would be fun. That would be fun for sure. I’ll be in.”
He also validated he was aware Luka Doncic and Jaylen Brown both played adding Cam Johnson to the conversation.
He also stated that he and Spurs legend Sean Elliott were due for a game.
“Yeah, he just provoked me in a duel. We’re gonna have to settle this.”
With Wemby’s popularity and influence over the league, it stands to reason that some photos could emerge during this season’s All-Star Game of Victor engaging other NBA stars in matches.
But as Victor Wembanyama is the future face of the NBA, a charity event is inevitable.
