PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - Much of the region saw snow overnight, from the Eastern Shore to Hampton — but now, it's the icy conditions that people will need to look out for. Winter weather conditions impact Hampton Roads In an effort to mitigate the chances for icy conditions, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) put down over 20 tons of brine on the roads, but with the rain continuing to come down into the early morning, motorists are urged to watch for icy spots while driving. WAVY viewers all across the region sent in photos of last night's snow — a sight Meteorologist Jeremy Wheeler said we haven't seen in well over 1,000 days. With chances for the water to refreeze Monday night, drivers are asked to look for slick spots and icy patches. As of Sunday, Virginia State Police said they saw an increase in crashes as the storm approached the region — with officers investigating seven crashes in the Hampton Roads region. Officials with VSP said two of the crashes have reported injuries, and that one has been reported as a fatal crash. 10 On Your Side has reached out for more information on the crashes.
