City crews continue snow removal efforts, City offices closed today

Crews worked overnight and are continuing into this morning to clear roads from yesterday’s winter weather.
Yesterday, Mayor Linda Gorton declared a snow emergency for Lexington. The city’s Emergency Operations Center is partially activated, and all public safety divisions are on 24-hour schedules through Thursday, Jan. 9. All city crews involved in snow removal duties are working alternating 12-hour shifts.
City offices for employees not involved in weather response will be closed today, Monday, January 6. In addition, the following will be closed today:
City Employee Pharmacy
Dr. Samuel Brown Health Center
Fayette County Clerk’s Office
Raven Run Nature Sanctuary and McConnel Springs Park (all programs canceled)
Dunbar, Castlewood, Kenwick, Tates Creek, and William Wells Brown community centers
All Play Golf Lexington courses (Lakeside, Tates Creek, Gay Brewer Jr. Course at Picadome and Kearney Hill Golf Links)
In addition, there will be no garbage, recycling, or yard waste collection today, Monday, Jan. 6.
The Urban County Council swearing-in ceremony has been postponed to 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, at the Lexington Senior Center.
Between midnight and 6 a.m. this morning (January 6), the Lexington Police Department responded to 0 non-injury collisions, 2 injury collisions, 16 traffic hazards, 4 escorts and 9 calls for motorist assistance. Drivers are asked to avoid non-essential travel. If travel is essential, drivers should allow themselves plenty of the time to reach their destination. Motorists are reminded to drive slowly, increase following distance, and be on the lookout for black ice.

The Office of Homelessness Prevention & Intervention Emergency Weather Plan remains in effect. The plan includes expanded shelter services and free transportation to shelters. The Emergency Weather Plan and a list of shelters are available at lexingtonky.gov/homelessness-prevention-and-intervention. Residents who see someone who may need shelter should call the Lexington Police Department non-emergency number at (859) 258-3600.
