Discussion
A winter storm is bringing freezing rain and snow across the higher elevations with icy conditions for the foothills into the I-40 stretch. Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories remain in effect through this morning with conditions improving as temperatures get above freezing by mid-morning. A cold rain will also make for messy travel across the Piedmont. Once the cold front moves through the region, the winds will pick up with gusts up to 40 mph possible. Expect bitter cold temperatures this week with lows tonight falling into the teens and 20s, but it will feel even colder with the wind chill. Highs will not get out of the low 40s this week with lows in the 20s. A Gulf low may bring a winter storm Friday night into Saturday with the potential for snow, sleet and/or freezing rain as far south as the Piedmont. This will be something to watch and what impacts we receive will be due to the location of the low so things can and will likely change. As of now it’s best to be prepared for some form of wintry weather late week.
