Central Ohio traffic conditions COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Ohio drivers who find themselves behind the wheel during heavy snow showers have a new digital tool to help them navigate the storm. The Ohio Department of Transportation announced on social media that its snowplow locations will now appear on the Waze navigation app as part of an innovative safety initiative. The partnership aims to increase driver awareness of ODOT's mobile work zones during winter, to help reduce crashes and improve road safety for motorists. In a short video, the agency explained that most of ODOT's fleet has been equipped with technology that updates plow locations every five minutes on Waze and waze.com. With this near-real-time visibility, the system will help drivers better anticipate road conditions and avoid potential hazards. ODOT officials also used the announcement to remind drivers to give snowplows plenty of space to operate safely, ending the message with the slogan, “Give us room to work,” reinforcing the importance of safe driving habits during winter weather. Additional winter driving tips on ODOT's website offer advice about driving near snowplows under the agency's motto “Don't Crowd the Plow,” including: Watch out for blind spots The field of vision for plow drivers is limited. If the plow truck's side mirrors are not visible, the driver likely cannot see the vehicle behind. Always maintain a distance of two to three car lengths when following a plow. Ice and snow, take it slow Snowplows typically operate at speeds significantly lower than the posted limit. Patience is crucial, as plow drivers require ample space to perform their tasks effectively. Avoid passing plows and remain alert for any unexpected stops or turns. Beware of snow clouds Plow trucks often create snow clouds while clearing roadways, which reduces visibility for nearby drivers.
