WARREN COUNTY, Va. (DC News Now) -- Officers found "items resembling homemade explosive devices" in a car driven by an Arlington man after he was arrested in Warren County on New Year's Day, according to the Warren County Sheriff's Office. According to the sheriff's office, at around 9:30 p.m. on Jan. 1, dispatchers received a 911 call reporting a suspicious dark-colored Honda off the roadway near Hillandale Road. The caller said the car did not have visible license plates and that they saw the driver throwing items from the vehicle while wearing a ski mask. Deputies found a car matching the vehicle's description at a 7-Eleven in Linden. As deputies approached, the driver, identified as Jordan Alexander Sweetman, 19, of Arlington, allegedly ran before officers arrested him. A preliminary investigation indicated that Sweetman did not have a driver's license, did not own the car and showed signs of "potential mental health issues," according to the sheriff's office. The vehicle also had damage "consistent with being stolen" and no license plates. Deputies also found "burglary tools" inside. The car was then towed to the sheriff's office for investigation. Medics took Sweetman to the hospital for a medical evaluation before he was taken to the RSW Regional Jail. Authorities charged him with obstruction of justice, possession of burglarious tools, wearing a mask to conceal identity and driving without a license. Bomb squad technicians quickly responded and safely removed "several devices" from the car before conducting a controlled detonation away from the public near Eastham Park. Explosive detection canines also responded to the area of Hillandale Road for additional searches. After finding the devices, authorities charged Sweetman with an additional felony of manufacturing and possessing explosive materials or devices. He is being held without bond. The investigation is ongoing, and police encourage anyone with information to contact 540-635-7100 or [email protected].
