10 On Your Side captured snow beginning to fall outside of the WAVY studios.
10 On Your Side’s Keagan Hughes spoke with officials from the Virginia Department of Transporation who say they are prepared for the first chance of snow this winter season.
“As soon as things start to happen, we'll be monitoring the pavement. Temperatures prepared to treat when needed with, you know, rock salt is necessary and making sure that nothing freezes or adheres to the pavement is the goal,” said William Collier, VDOT District Maintenance Engineer for the Hampton Roads district.
Since Thursday, VDOT has been going over plans, updating loading equipment and doing last-minute equipment checks. With brine solution on the roads, VDOT says this is the first attack of the winter precipitation and helps keep it from freezing and adhering to the roadway.
“At that point, it gets much more difficult. We certainly can't just plow off. You know, we're either scraping it off or having to, you know, use more and more materials, salt and so on to melt it,” said Collier.
Dominion Energy says they are not expecting big issues in our area. Tim Eberly from Dominion Energy says they will be deploying crews and bucket trucks to other parts of the state.
“In some of these areas where we're expecting to be the hardest hit, there is the potential for some pretty significant outages at last, you know, that are, you know, multiday type outages,” said Eberly.
Increase in Crashes
As the winter storm approached the Commonwealth, Virginia State Police saw an increase in crashes Sunday.
Virginia State Police investigated 85 crashes, including three injury crashes between noon and 3:30 p.m. on Sunday in the Wytheville District. In the Salem district, VSP investigated 51 crashes, including four injury crashes.
VSP has investigated three crashes in the Hampton Roads region, including one with reported injuries.
There have been no fatal crashes.
VSP increased the number of state troopers on the roads to handle the storm and adjusted to 12-hour shifts.
