NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) -- To start off the new year, Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) said they are increasing security on all transit modes. This starts immediately. Thomas Becher, an HRT spokesperson, said that includes The Tide light rail, buses and rideshare programs. The Tide light Rail's 11 stations in Norfolk will also see an increase in security. Becher adds the increase in security wasn't caused by any specific incident. HRT said they are joining transit agencies across the country who are enhancing security to provide safe and efficient operations for customers. "We're increasing security awareness as people get back to work for the new year," said Becher. "Its something that's not based on any specific threat or issue but rather we're doing what a lot of agencies are doing across the country in public transit." Standard patrols will increase and closed-circuit video monitoring will be done as well. These additional security measures will be in place as commuters head back to work after the holidays. HRT anticipates providing enhanced security for the foreseeable future. If customers witness suspicious behavior while on transit, Becher said they should dial 911 or call a Hampton Road Transit representative immediately. "Best thing is for everyone to look around and pay attention," said Becher. "If you see something, 911 is the best. We have our own control center with the six cities and great partnerships with the six cities." "Really, if you see something, say something."
