BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — Every year, the CDC says that about 4,000 women in the United States die of cervical cancer. And because January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, North Dakota Health and Human Services (ND HHS) is urging women to get screened. The CDC says that there are about 11,500 new cases of cervical cancer each year. The American Cancer Society says it's usually diagnosed in women between the ages of 35 and 44. However, officials say that most older women don't realize that they're at risk of developing cervical cancer as they age. ND HHS is encouraging North Dakota women to get screened, as research shows that the cancer is highly preventable if it's caught in time. And ND HHS has some quick tips on when it's your time to get screened: If you're 21 to 29 years old, you should get a Pap test every three years. If you're 30 to 64 years old, recommendations change, and officials recommend getting Pap and HPV tests every five years. And if you're over 65, you should talk to your provider about how often you should get screened. If you want to learn more about screenings, talk to your trusted health care provider or reach out to ND HHS for more details at (866) 614-600.
