WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- Metro has announced that Metrobus service will be modified on Monday, Jan. 6, as a winter storm is expected to hit the region. Snow is expected to make its way into the DMV Sunday night, according to forecasts. Metrobus operates on four different plans (Light, Moderate, Severe and Lifeline) during inclement weather, depending on the amount of snowfall. Due to snow detours, Metro said the bus service is set to operate on a Moderate plan, reducing the number of routes from 193 to 114. As of Sunday, there are no disruptions to Metorail services, but WMATA said some reduced service is expected as conditions change. MetroAccess will also adjust service in response to "real-time conditions." Several schools closed across DMV ahead of winter storm In preparation for the storm, Metro has nearly 600 pieces of equipment and teams available to respond to snow and ice accumulation at stations, rail yards, bus facilities and parking garages, according to a release. Salt and snow-cleaning equipment has been deployed to rail stations, and nine salt domes containing more than 300 tons of bulk salt will be utilized to combat icy conditions. On Monday, Metro will run trains "designed to clear ice from rails," and staff will be placed in key locations to respond to buses that run into issues. However, WMATA noted that if conditions worsen, customers should prepare for Metrorail, Metrobus and Metro Access services to be reduced.
