VDOT: Avoid driving in parts of Virginia due to weather conditions
Jan 05, 2025
VIRGINIA (DC News Now) -- The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is advising drivers not to travel in parts of Virginia from Sunday afternoon into Monday due to winter weather conditions.
VDOT said hazardous conditions are expected overnight into Monday morning, with snow expected to fall at a rate of an inch an hour.
Accumulation will depend on the area, but between 5-12 inches is expected to fall in Northern Virginia, Winchester, Harrisonburg, Fredericksburg and parts of Central Virginia.
VDOT advises against traveling to other parts of the state as well due to dangerous driving conditions caused by low temperatures, a mixture of rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow.

The strong impact of the storm will require crews to be out for multiple days to clear roads of snow. With snow removal requiring a few days, VDOT said it is important that travelers avoid the roads to allow crews to clear paths more safely and effectively.
The winter weather has already made its way to parts of Virginia, and road conditions are "deteriorating rapidly," according to VDOT.
VDOT said crews are already working to treat areas in the western parts of the Commonwealth, and in areas where the storm is also expected, crews are set up to begin plowing and treating the roads when the weather warrants it.
