Crews respond to partial building collapses in French Quarter, Seventh Ward

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Crews with the New Orleans Fire Department responded to two partial building collapses on Sunday, Jan. 5.
The NOFD reported that first collapse happened at a building in the 800 block of Decatur Street, where contractors told crews that a trash chute separated from the building, causing part of the second-floor balcony and its railing to collapse around 12:11 p.m.

According to NOLA Ready, residents in the area are being asked to take safety precautions due to the fallen scaffolding at the corner of Decatur and Madison streets.
NOFD officials said the 800 block of Decatur Street will be closed until crews have deemed it safe.

The NOFD reported the second partial collapse happened in the 2000 block of Frenchmen Street in the Seventh Ward around 1:12 p.m.
According to crews, the outside wall of a one-story home fell onto an occupied double.

NOFD officials said neighbors told them the one-story home, occupied by three people and a dog, "had been in a state of disrepair since Hurricane Katrina."
Crews said that only the dog was inside the home at the time of the collapse and was safely removed.
No injuries were reported from both collapses.
