Communications in Custer County restored after fiber cut
Jan 05, 2025
(CUSTER COUNTY, Colo.) — The Custer County Sheriff's Office reported that power outages across Custer County, Western Fremont County, and Chaffee County on Friday, Jan. 3, were caused by an accidental cut of a fiber cable.
Communications were restored around 5 a.m. on Saturday, though many of the communications providers in the area use the same cable, so if anyone still is without communications, they are encouraged to call their provider.
The Sheriff's Office said that as a mitigation effort, a deployable cellular communications tower, called Satellite Cells on Light Trucks (SatCOLT), was requested. This tower can accommodate up to 100 simultaneous cell phone calls in situations such as a cut line, and is powered by a generator.

The SatCOLT is deployed from Denver at no cost, due to an agreement with First Net to provide emergency responder communications.
The Custer County Sheriff's Office said that there has been an increased number of outages since summer and are generally caused by careless excavations along fiber pathways. If anyon will be digging, they are asked to call 811 to have utilities located and marked by the special markers to avoid causing damage and a large outage.
