BISMARCK, N.D. (KXNET) — While Alzheimer's and other dementia-related illnesses are devastating for seniors, the condition also hurts those who surround them. To help teenagers affected by these diseases, the Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA) has once again opened up its annual Teen Alzheimer's Awareness Scholarship. According to a press release from the AFA, the scholarship program is funded through charitable donors, and open to all current high school seniors living in the US who will be attending a US college or university in the fall. To apply, teens must submit an essay or a video describing how Alzheimer's has impacted their lives, what they have learned from the experience, and how they plan to advocate or raise awareness in the future. The ways that Alzheimer's can affect one's life include the following: Having a loved one with Alzheimer's or another dementia-related illness Helping care for someone with Alzheimer's or another dementia-related illness Volunteering or working in a care setting that serves individuals with dementia-related illnesses History raising Alzheimer's awareness in their community, school, or workplace History conducting Alzheimer's research All entries must be submitted before Saturday, March 1st, at 4:00 p.m. CST. One entrant will receive a $5,000 scholarship, and other prizes will be awarded to runner-ups and honorable mentions.
