After leading Lake County sheriff deputies and local police officers on multiple high-speed car chases in the north suburbs, two men were arrested Sunday in connection to an overnight drive-by shooting of two women.
At approximately 2 a.m. Sunday, deputies with the Lake County sheriff’s office responded to an area near the intersection of North Green Bay Road and North Bonnie Brook Lane in the village of Beach Park after receiving a report of a vehicle crash and a shooting.
They found a vehicle in a ditch with two adult women who had gunshot wounds; one had been shot in the eye and the other in the leg. A deputy applied a tourniquet to the second woman’s leg and both were transported to area hospitals, where they are expected to recover, according to the sheriff’s office.
In their initial investigation, authorities found both women had been driving home on Green Bay Road after leaving a bar in North Chicago when a gray Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat pulled up next to them, opening fire on their vehicle. According to vehicle websites, the specific make and model of this vehicle allows for top speeds of over 200 mph, with the ability to go from 0-60 mph in less than four seconds.
The sheriff’s office issued a regional broadcast with a description of the Charger, which was recognized half an hour later by an officer with the Waukegan Police Department. The driver of the vehicle fled quickly after police tried to carry out a traffic stop on Sunset Avenue.
Shortly after 2:41 a.m., a Lake County sheriff’s deputy saw the Charger traveling south on Route 41 near Route 173, but the driver of the vehicle quickly sped away. The deputy gave chase but lost the Charger after it made a U-turn. Later, when another sheriff’s deputy spotted the vehicle as it traveled east on Route 173, another pursuit ensued. The driver, however, once again evaded police.
As the vehicle raced east, it struck a tire deflation device deployed by a Zion police officer, and after maintaining its speed temporarily, the vehicle crashed into a wooded area near Route 173 and Joana Avenue in Zion. The Charger’s occupants fled the vehicle.
Lake County sheriff’s deputies and officers with Zion and Waukegan police established a perimeter and deployed police K-9 units and drones to search for the suspects. They apprehended a young man and an older man and recovered a rifle and pistol from the Charger, authorities said. Officers also found another pistol in a backyard near where one of the suspects was apprehended.
According to the sheriff’s office, preliminary information indicated the Charger might have been stolen from Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin. Authorities continue to investigate, but as of Sunday afternoon no charges had been filed.
