The Browns’ 2024 season was like a giant mudslide impossible to stop. The mudslide destroyed everything in its path until it finally settled at the bottom of 3-14 Hill. Offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey and offensive line coach Andy Dickerson paid for the Browns finishing last in the league in points scored (258) with their jobs. Each was fired on Jan. 5, less than 24 hours after a 35-10 loss to the Ravens ended the Browns season. Each lasted only one season on Kevin Stefanski’s coaching staff. “I think the world of those two guys as people, as coaches, but I’m going to go in a different direction and I’m appreciative of their hard work as well,” Stefanski said at the start of his wrap-up news conference in Berea. Kevin Stefanski in his wrap up press conference Monday said he believes the #Browns have the right core players on the current roster for a quick turnaround from this 3-14 season. pic.twitter.com/gNJFS0OM1U — Jeff Schudel (@jsproinsider) January 5, 2025 Stefanski said he will begin a search for a new offensive coordinator “right away” and added some potential candidates were coaching in NFL games being played Jan. 5. He and general manager Andrew Berry will lead the search, Stefanski said. “We have to play better on offense in a bunch of different areas,” Stefanski said. “Obviously, we got behind in too many games, but we definitely need to run the ball more effectively.” Dorsey replaced Alex Van Pelt, who was fired after the Browns finished 11-6 and made the playoffs as a wild-card team in 2023. Dickerson replaced Bill Callahan, who left the Browns after four years as their offensive line coach to take the same job with the Titans so he could work with his son, Titans head coach Brian Callahan. Van Pelt quickly was hired by the Patriots to be their offensive coordinator. He might be available to return to Cleveland if he and Stefanski want to reunite because the Patriots fired head coach Jared Mayo on Jan. 5. Van Pelt was the Browns O.C. from 2020-23. Clint Kubiak, offensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints, is another possibility because the Saints are looking for a head coach. The Browns rushed the ball 391 times in 2024 and attempted 661 pass plays. An additional 66 plays ended with the quarterback being sacked. They rushed the ball 518 times in 2023 and attempted 624 passes. The quarterbacks were sacked 45 times. “I would say where we had our most success is we’re a wide-zone team,” Conklin said. “We brought in guys that do that and have been very successful at doing that. I hope that’s where we move back to. “I just think we lacked identity offensively. I think we tried to do a lot of different things and we didn’t really get good at doing one thing. There were definitely hiccups and stuff that we wanted to iron out that didn’t get ironed out, unfortunately. I think everybody learned a lesson about what this team’s built around and what we need to do moving forward.” Related Articles Cleveland Browns | Jimmy Haslam should not trust Andrew Berry to fix the Browns | Jeff Schudel Cleveland Browns | Surprisingly, oddsmakers have Browns star Myles Garrett longshot to win DPOY | Jeff Schudel Cleveland Browns | Browns can earn first pick in draft with loss to Ravens and some help Cleveland Browns | Bailey Zappe to start Browns’ season finale, fourth QB this season and team’s 40th since 1999 Cleveland Browns | Haslam Sports Group moves ahead with domed stadium plans despite pressure from Cleveland officials Bitonio echoed Conklin, saying the change in coaching philosophy got away from running the ball. Star running back Nick Chubb was injured in the second game of 2023, yet Van Pelt and Stefanski stuck with running the ball last season. “I think that’s what Coach Stefanski’s comfortable with, the marriage of the run and the pass,” Bitonio said. “You take your shots with some play-action heavy things. I think it’s what we’ve had the most success under. “The line was kind of built that way as well. I thought Wyatt (Teller) and I, as pullers running some outside zone, I think that was what I did well in my career, and I probably pulled less than 10 times this year overall. And there were games in my career where I pulled eight or 10 times in a game. I think this year they wanted to go all-in on the RPOs  (run-pass option) and what made Deshaun most comfortable at quarterback.” Stefanski called plays his first four years as head coach and started 2024 doing the same thing when Deshaun Watson was the quarterback. He turned play-calling over to Dorsey after seven games when Jameis Winston took over after Watson’s right Achilles ruptured in the Oct. 20 game with the Bengals. The Browns rushed 157 times and attempted 252 passes when Stefanski called plays. They rushed the ball 234 times and attempted 409 passes in the 10 games Dorsey called plays. It was evident early in training camp that the offensive linemen were having difficulty adapting to Dickerson’s coaching style. The Browns failed to score 20 points in any of their first seven games. Stefanski was asked whether he could simply have reverted to what worked last year even if the change was made midseason. “I think, bottom line, the results were not there,” Stefanski said. “We all share in that. And there are things that we have to improve. There are things that we have to fix, and that’s what we’ll do.” The Browns scored 20 or more points only three times in 2024. They did it 11 times in 2023 and finished 10-1 in those games. They scored 22 points in the second game but lost to the Steelers, 26-22. Browns coach looks on during the Dec. 29 loss to the Dolphins.
