Western Mass. youth and police unite to donate 1,000 care packs to the homeless, donations needed

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Local youth volunteers and law enforcement come together to assemble and distribute nearly 1,000 backpacks filled with essential items for homeless individuals.
Donations are needed and can be dropped off at the Pedal Thru Youth headquarters, located at 101 Front St. in West Springfield inside the historic former Strathmore Papermill, or Curry Honda, located at 767 Memorial Drive in Chicopee.
A heartwarming community initiative will take place on Saturday, February 1 at the Pedal Thru Youth headquarters, where the items will be distributed.
The Cruiser Care Packs initiative is spearheaded by Pedal Thru Youth, a nonprofit led by Bob “The Bike Man” Charland, in partnership with local 4-H, Girl Scouts, and Boy Scouts chapters. Their mission is simple yet impactful: to provide warmth and comfort to homeless individuals during the harsh winter months.
The backpacks, many of which have been donated by community members, are filled with winter necessities, including:
• Hand and foot warmers
• Gloves, hats, and fleece throw blankets
• Warm socks and ponchos
• Chapsticks and travel-sized toiletries (such as deodorant and combs)
For children in need, the bags will include special items to bring smiles, like coloring books, crayons, and sunglasses.
The organizers hope this effort becomes a year-round opportunity to support those in need. Donations of gently used backpacks and supplies can be dropped off at Pedal Thru Youth’s headquarters anytime.
Community members interested in supporting the initiative can contribute by donating supplies or volunteering at future events.
The Cruiser Care Packs event highlights the power of collaboration, with youth, law enforcement, and volunteers working together to bring relief to homeless communities.
