RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Max Brosmer threw for 211 yards and a touchdown, and Darius Taylor ran for 113 yards, scored a touchdown, and even threw for another as Minnesota beat Virginia Tech 24-10 in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl on Friday. This was Minnesota’s eighth straight bowl win.
Elijah Spencer caught six passes for 81 yards and two touchdowns for the Golden Gophers. Coach P.J. Fleck is now 6-0 in bowl games and celebrated with the traditional mayo bath.
Virginia Tech’s backup QB, Collins Schlee, ran for a touchdown, and Ayden Greene caught six passes for 115 yards. The Hokies have now lost five of their last six bowl games. Minnesota outgained them 403-223 and controlled most of the game.
In the fourth quarter, Dante Lovett intercepted Brosmer to give Virginia Tech the ball at Minnesota’s 15-yard line. But a few plays later, Za’Quan Bryan intercepted William Watson in the end zone, ending Virginia Tech’s hopes of a comeback.
The Hokies rotated quarterbacks, but neither Schlee nor Watson passed for more than 100 yards. Schlee provided a spark with a 67-yard pass to Greene and later scored on a 3-yard run, but Virginia Tech couldn’t keep up.
Minnesota pulled away in the second quarter, scoring 21 straight points. Spencer caught a 10-yard pass from Taylor and a 12-yard pass from Brosmer for touchdowns, while Taylor added a 28-yard TD run.
Virginia Tech kicker John Love made a bowl-record 60-yard field goal. The game’s mascot, “Tubby” the mayo jar, was revealed to be hip-hop artist Flavor Flav. Hokies coach Brent Pry also got a 15-yard penalty for leaving the coach’s box to argue with the refs.
