Longwood’s big second half leads to 8378 win over Charleston Southern

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Longwood pulled off a comeback to beat Charleston Southern 83-78 in their Big South home opener on Saturday night.
After trailing by four at halftime, Longwood exploded for 52 points in the second half. Their defense turned things around, helping them take a lead as big as 16 before holding off a late push from Charleston Southern.
Kyrell Luc led Longwood with 19 points, scoring 15 of them in the second half, and added four assists. Colby Garland chipped in 17 points and six assists, keeping the team in the game early.
The Lancers shot 70% in the second half and hit seven of eight three-pointers after missing all five attempts in the first half. Elijah Tucker added 13 points, and the team’s ball movement and defense carried them to victory.
Charleston Southern was led by Taje’ Kelly with 25 points and Daylen Berry with 18. RJ Johnson scored all 19 of his points after halftime to help the Buccaneers close the gap late, but Longwood’s free throws in the final moments sealed the win.
The Lancers are now 8-1 at home and will host UNC Asheville on Wednesday, January 8, at 7 p.m.
