WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) -- A man is critically injured after being shot by police in Winston-Salem.
On Saturday around 11 p.m., police were called to a home on Zacharys Keep Court. The caller said that a man inside the home was armed with a knife and threatening other people.
When the officer arrived at the scene, police say that they "heard screaming from multiple individuals, including children, inside the home." The door opened and police say officers saw Marcel Ndimubandi holding a knife.
WSPD says that when the officer attempted to speak with Ndimubandi, he "charged at the officer" with the knife. The officer shot him, and he was taken to the hospital where, at last check, he was in critical but stable condition.
No one else was hurt in the incident and the investigation is ongoing. WSPD says charges are forthcoming.
"In the last 21 months, Mr. Ndimubandi has 11 charges including two counts of assault on a female and three counts of assault on a government official," police say.
The SBI is conducted an investigation into the shooting. WSPD is not releasing the identity of the officer involved at this time.
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the men and women of the Winston-Salem Police Department for what they do on a daily basis. The job of a police officer involves the ability to make split second decisions that will oftentimes be second guessed by those who have not walked in those shoes. This is precisely why our job is a calling and not just another job," Chief William H. Penn, Jr said at an early morning briefing on the incident.
