An important aspect regarding the arrest of a Trenton man for an alleged sexual assault of a child during an in-home prayer service involves his U.S. resident status. Yes, it’s troubling news that the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office arrested Jose Agustin-Hernandez, 51, and charged him with first-degree aggravated sexual assault, second-degree criminal sexual contact, and third-degree endangering the welfare of a child, however, if he lists as being unauthorized, undocumented or illegal, then other people here without papers in the should feel concerned. Now is not the time to draw attention to Trenton. These types of crimes highlight President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign which scared the crap out of voters — those stories about undocumented men involved in sexual assaults and murders of women accompanied by his promise to round ‘em up with a massive deportation rodeo effort when elected. Cases such as this Agustin-Hernandez incident, when he allegedly entered a prayer service at a chapel inside a home on Hamilton Ave. then assaulted a sleeping six-year-old girl in a bedroom, make it easy to support the deportation plans of Trump. Real-life stories such as this attract national attention, including mass-deportation supporters. Inevitably, Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents will roll into this capital city, home to an estimated 10,000 undocumented immigrants. Casey DeBlasio, spokesperson for the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office, said no definitive information exists regarding Agustin-Hernandez’ status although an affidavit of probable cause included an ICE detainer placed on the suspect. Make no mistake about this planned deportation initiative — the sanctuary city of Trenton and all other cities holding similar safe designations for immigrants sight in the crosshairs of deportation czar, Thomas Homan, who promised immediate action on the arrest and deportation of undocumented persons. Many politicians press for Homan to focus on the deportation of criminals although arguments made for an expansive agenda note a significant number of undocumented residents broke the law by entering U.S. borders without necessary documentation or overstayed legal status arrangements. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) made this comment during a post-election press conference as deportation plans ratcheted. “The next administration is determined to remove those who serve as the backbone of our local economies and communities. Our solution, instead of turning our military on our own people, is to document them. Document the undocumented.” The Ocasio-Cortez anthem will be muffled significantly as crimes committed by unauthorized residents against ‘real Americans’ gains media coverage. Also, expect news articles to reflect countries of origin by lawbreakers — Guatemalan, Mexican, Honduran, Haitian, Columbian, Costa Rican, etc. For instance, consider this news account of a recent crime in New York City where Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, a 33-year-old Guatemalan citizen in the United States illegally, became another poster child for Trump’s get the hell out of America agenda.Zapeta-Calil allegedly set on fire and killed a homeless Caucasian woman while she slept on a stationary New York City F train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue Station. The Columbian faces murder and arson charges. Authorities only recently identified Debrina Kawam of Toms River as the victim. By the way, whether victims identify as homeless or housewife, race matters in discussions about deportation and illegal immigrants. Conversations rarely discuss the number of undocumented Europeans living in the U.S. While the Trump administration plans appropriation of $86 billion for the deportation initiative, local municipalities could collect millions. An ACLU report generated by information obtained via Open Public Records Act (OPRA) noted ICE may turn the closed Albert  “Bo” Robinson Treatment Center on Enterprise Ave., Trenton into a detention facility for undocumented arrestees. Closed in 2022, a re-opening of the 1,026-bed facility will mean jobs for local residents and money-making opportunities for businesses involved in operations of prisons and detention facilities. Rest assured, being an undocumented resident in a sanctuary city ranks as precarious circumstance. We all can agree that any person who commits such aforementioned criminal acts deserves severe retribution. L.A. Parker is a Trentonian columnist.
