WASHINGTON, DC (DC News Now)--The elderly and those with disabilities around the District won't have to worry about clearing snow from the approaching winter storm. Volunteers with the "Snow Team Heroes" program stocked up on supplies on Saturday at the Columbia Heights Community Center, the Deanwood Community Center, and the King Greenleaf Community Center. They'll be using those supplies not only for themselves, but also for neighbors who may need help. "Maybe they need to go to the grocery store or to a doctor's appointment, or even just travel on the Metro," said Dominique Scott, the director of Serve DC, which oversees the program, as to why the volunteers are needed. "So having someone there to help shovel your driveway and sidewalks so that you don't have to when you're unable to, makes a big difference and has a rippling effect," he added. What are DC residents buying ahead of the winter weather? Volunteers received free shovels, winter gloves, hand warmers and salt to get rid of the snow. "I felt like I could serve people in my community, which is important to me," said Stephen Coleman Kenney, one of the volunteers. "And do so in a convenient way, you know, able to walk just, you know, a few blocks down from my house to help people." Volunteers will help neighbors within a three-block radius of where they live. "It's a great opportunity to, perform a random act of kindness to answer New Year's resolution, to get out and get fit in a unique and fun way when the snow comes," said Scott. Scott said about 600 people have requested help removing snow from the program, which has existed since 2020.
