FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - For almost 24 hours a wanted man kept a northwest Fresno neighborhood on lockdown after firing off a gun Friday evening, the Fresno Police Department announced.
Police say just before 10 p.m. Friday night they responded to the 3200 block of west Indianapolis Avenue after receiving a report of a family member who was firing off a gun in the home.
As officers arrived all family members in the home were able to safely evacuate. Officers report a 27-year-old was alone in the house when he was experiencing "some type of episode" and repeatedly fired a firearm inside.
SWAT called after day-long stand-off with wanted man in northwest Fresno
Police report hearing additional gunshots as they established a perimeter around the home. Officers worked through the night to make contact with the man inside and get him to peacefully surrender.
Investigators report the man was wanted for several felony charges related to firearm possession and firing a firearm inside a residence.
Negotiators on scene were able to maintain a line with the suspect inside however, police say the line was lost Saturday afternoon. The SWAT team was eventually called to aid with negotiation.
Just before the SWAT team was ready to make entry inside, officers report the man attempted to flee the home eastbound on Indianapolis Avenue. Running on foot he carried a hammer in one hand and a rifle in the other.
After officers called for him to surrender and lay on the ground police say the man complied and he was peacefully taken into custody around 7:20 p.m. Saturday evening.
Fresno PD says for about 22 hours residents had to shelter in place only to evacuate later as the SWAT team was getting ready to deploy.
Detectives are working to serve a search warrant to the residence so they may search for further evidence and assess the damage. No injuries were reported.
Police are working to determine if the suspect's "episode" was drug-induced or related to mental health.
Fresno PD says the man was arrested on suspicion of felony firearm charges related to firearm possession and shooting the firearm.
