NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — A dramatic shift in weather is set to unfold across the region, starting with storms Sunday and transitioning to freezing temperatures by early next week.
Sunday begins with a chance of light showers and possibly a thunderstorm as warm, moist air pushes into the area. Temperatures will rise into the low 70s during the day, with breezy south winds gusting up to 30 mph.
By Sunday night, a strong cold front will bring widespread showers and thunderstorms, with a few storms capable of producing damaging winds or even an isolated tornado. The heaviest weather will likely move through during the evening, weakening as it travels east.
Once the front passes, temperatures will plummet. Overnight lows will drop into the upper 30s by Monday morning, with gusty northwest winds making it feel even colder.
Highs Monday will struggle to reach the upper 40s, and lows Monday night could dip into the 20s across northern areas. Cold weather advisories and freeze warnings are expected, especially for areas outside the immediate coastline.
Tuesday and Wednesday will remain chilly, with daytime highs only reaching the 40s and overnight lows hovering around freezing. A gradual warm-up is expected by the end of the week, but rain chances will return as another weather system approaches.
Residents should prepare for possible severe weather Sunday and take precautions for freezing temperatures early next week, especially protecting plants, pets, and pipes from the cold.
