Kansas City grocers slammed ahead of winter weather, trucks moved up

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Grocery stores across the Kansas City metro were slammed in preparation for winter weather.
“We thought it was going to start getting busy yesterday, on Friday, but it started earlier in the week,” said Karla Quandt. She’s the store director of the Hy-Vee in Shawnee.
“And it's been just it's been it's been busy; I'll tell you that. When the doors opened at 6:00, we had at least 20 customers waiting in line just to get in right at six. And it's been busy ever since.”
Shoppers were packing the parking lot early Saturday morning, and for Instacart shopper Caitlynn O’Hara, it’s been that way for a while.
“For the last three days it’s been slammed because, you know, everybody kind of closed on the first of the year,” she said.
“Shelves are empty, lines are long, honestly all we’re trying to do is be as nice to each other as possible, cause we’re all going through the same thing.”

Quandt told FOX4 that their stock was low on Friday night, but truckloads of groceries helped them get everything stocked for Saturday. She says trucks scheduled to arrive Sunday, had been moved up to Saturday.
“Obviously, we looked at it from a sense of, hey, let's make sure that we're stocked, but also for the fact of our drivers to make sure that they get home safely as well,” said Quandt.
“We don't know what it's going to be like. And so, we've just been in really open communication of, hey, let's just see what happens and we'll go from there.”
Meanwhile, O’Hara got her groceries earlier in the week, in preparation to deliver groceries to others.
“Now we hear the stories everyone’s saying it’s not going to be that bad, and that’s cool, we’re hoping for that but, you know, we wanted to be prepared early,” she said.
She also said that a little kindness goes a long way.
“Just try to be kind to everyone, because we’re all kind of panicked about the storm, what might happen, what might not happen, so just be nice to the employees if you can cause they’ve been working their butts off, we’ve seen it.”
