The Hawaiʻi Nurses' Association said nurses will begin their strike on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 7 a.m. and will conclude on Friday, Jan. 17 at 6:59 a.m.
“The nurses at Wilcox have been fighting for safer nurse-to-patient staffing to deliver excellent care for the people of Kaua‘i. They should not be subject to retaliation because of their advocacy," explained Rosalee Agas-Yuu, HNA president.

According to HNA, multiple unfair labor practice complaints have been filed with the National Labor Relations Board.
One unfair labor practice filed said, "off-duty nurses were prohibited from accessing their worksite to speak with their fellow union members and were subjected to illegal threats and discrimination."
“HPH continues to disrespect its nurses by forcing us to work in unsafe staffing conditions. Ultimately, the people who suffer the most are our patients. This decision to strike is not being taken lightly," said Jessi Dettle, RN, Wilcox nurse.
Wilcox Medical Center announced they received the strike notice on Saturday, Jan. 4, stating they will "remain open to provide consistent high-quality care for the community" while both parties work toward an agreement.
We are extremely disappointed by HNA’s decision to strike as we are so close to reaching anagreement. Our responsibility is to take care of our community and the people of Kaua‘i who depend on us. Wilcox will remain open and our patients as we always have.

The hospital added they have secured a temporary workforce to ensure patient services and hospital operations are not impacted.
“We are committed to reaching an agreement so that our nurses can benefit from a new contract as soon as possible, and we can focus on what matters most to us all — caring for our community, together," Chahanovich added.
