CHARLOTTE, N.C – Charlotte Mecklenburg Police say 18 people were arrested during the New Year’s Eve celebration in Uptown Tuesday. Police are crediting their “successful strategic operations plan” that resulted in no major incidents during the festivities. According to a news release posted to the department’s website, officers seized six firearms. Out of the people arrested, police say 10 of them were juvenile ranging between 10 and 15 years old. CMPD says they are facing charges including Possession of Marijuana and violation of the Youth Protection Ordinance. CMPD posted signs in Romare Bearden Park saying children under 18 were not allowed in the area without adult supervision. Police say all parents/guardians of the arrested juveniles were cited and charged with Contributing to the Delinquency and Neglect by Parents and Others. Before the New Year’s Eve celebrations, CMPD officers visited the homes of prior offenders to discourage criminal behavior. Out of 10 home visits CMPD says there were no juveniles who re-offended on New Year’s Eve. CMPD says eight adults between the ages of 18 and 42 were arrested during the NYE celebration and the majority of them are facing weapons charges. On December 31st, 2023 five people were shot by a teenager who later plead guilty to several charges related to shooting into a crowd.
