From a certain point of view, the Giants can accomplish a lot with a win on Sunday against the Eagles. It would mark the Giants’ first victory in Philadelphia since 2013 (11 straight losses), and it would spare them the embarrassment of setting a team record with 14 losses in a season as well as going winless in NFC East games for the first time ever (since 1967). You can bet that John Mara doesn’t want that stain on his franchise as its 100th season draws to a close. “If you think I didn’t want to beat Philadelphia the last game of the season after the history we’ve had against them, you’re crazy,” the co-owner and team president said after last season when the Giants beat the Eagles in Week 18. “There was no regret about that at all. I never want to feel that way where you are hoping to lose a game. That’s the wrong message to send to your locker room. The players feel that, and I don’t know how they respect you after that.” So yes, the Giants will go out all out to win this game. Well, as “all out” as you can when you’re down seven starters from the beginning of the season due to injury. But on the other side, quarterback Jalen Hurts is out and the Eagles are expected to rest at least 10 other starters including running back Saquon Barkley. Another gold star for Mara, who won’t have to witness Barkley set the NFL’s single-season rushing record against his former team and instead settle for 2,005. Here’s the bottom line though: Regardless of who the Eagles deploy in this game and how legitimate or illegitimate a win would be for the Giants, Mara can’t let what happens on the field dictate the future. The season was over a long time ago. Scoring 45 points last Sunday for the first time in nine years was nice, but it didn’t come until the Giants had already set the team record with 10 straight losses. They have been eliminated from playoff contention since Thanksgiving, which is really all that matters for this failing regime. Head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen have taken several steps backward in years two and three since making the playoffs in their first year. And the noncompetitive nature of this season — blowout losses to the Bucs and Falcons after the bye week, most notably — doesn’t inspire hope that they’re close to turning the corner. But if Mara truly believes in Daboll and Schoen’s long-term process, and that it will translate into better results once they acquire a legitimate quarterback, then stick with both of them. Don’t pull a half-measure and can the coach but retain the GM just to throw chum to the fans who want to see someone pay for this season from hell. That will only create disconnect and weaken your pool of coaching candidates. Daboll and Schoen have been in lockstep from the beginning. There is also the possibility that Mara is simply scared to hit the reset button again and possibly hire people who are even worse than Daboll and Schoen. After all, the Giants are already on their fourth coach and third GM since 2017. “Just focus on the things you can control,” Daboll said Friday when asked if he thinks this could be his final game as the Giants’ head coach. “Focus on coming out here and ending up the week on a good note and getting ready to play a game against Philly.” Whatever his rationale, Mara can’t be blinded by a potential win in Philadelphia. That is the fear after Mara was seen smiling and exchanging pleasantries with a reporter when the media entered the Giants locker room after last Sunday’s win against the Colts. He may want desperately to stay the course and be patient with this current regime, but Mara has to keep one thing in mind. Beating the Eagles on Sunday would mean absolutely nothing for the future. Giants Gameday The Game: Giants (3-13) at Eagles (13-3), Lincoln Financial Field, Sunday, 1 p.m. ET (CBS) The Line: Philadelphia by 2.5 History: The Eagles lead the all-time series, 94-88-2, and have won five of the last six meetings including in Week 7 of this season in the Meadowlands, 28-3. The Eagles have also won 11 straight matchups in Philadelphia since the Giants last won there in 2013. Key Matchups: Giants RG Jake Kubas vs. Eagles DT Jordan Davis: Davis is among the Eagles’ defensive starters who will likely get some work in. Kubas will be making his third straight start on the Giants’ banged-up offensive line — another big step in his journey since signing as an undrafted free agent in May. Giants WR Malik Nabers vs. Eagles CB Quinyon Mitchell: Mitchell has started all 16 games with 12 passes defended. Nabers needs just two catches to break the single-season record for rookies in a season, set last year by the Rams’ Puka Nacua (105). Giants DT Jordon Riley vs. Eagles C Cam Jurgens: Jurgens is one of the Eagles’ offensive starters who is expected to play some snaps. He made the Pro Bowl in his first season as the replacement starter for future Hall of Famer Jason Kelce. Riley, a seventh-round pick in 2023, needs to put more good tape on film. Giants OLB Ty Summers vs. Eagles TE Grant Calcaterra: Calcaterra, who has made 12 starts with Dallas Goedert injured, has only 288 receiving yards on the season but could be the Eagles’ top target in this game with key receivers rested. Summers, a sixth-year pro who came off the practice squad in late September, is poised to make his second straight start. Injury Report: Giants: OUT: ILB Micah McFadden (neck), OT Evan Neal (rib/hip), C John Michael Schmitz (ankle), DT Armon Watts (knee), CB Greg Stroman Jr. (shin). Eagles: OUT: QB Jalen Hurts (concussion/left finger); DOUBTFUL: RB Saquon Barkley (rest), WR A.J. Brown (knee/rest), G Landon Dickerson (rest), OT Lane Johnson (rest), CB Darius Slay (rest), WR DeVonta Smith (wrist/rest), LB Zack Baun (rest), DT Jalen Carter (rest), OT Jordan Mailata (rest), LB Nakobe Dean (abdomen); QUESTIONABLE: QB Kenny Pickett (ribs), RB Will Shipley (concussion). Giant Facts: Two of the Giants’ starters played college football in Pennsylvania (OL Greg Van Roten at Penn, S Jason Pinnock at Pittsburgh). … With last week’s win over the Colts, the Giants moved ahead of the Browns (15.5) for the second-fewest points per game (16.3). … The Giants have a -7 turnover differential compared to the Eagles’ +10 margin. The Prediction: Eagles 24, Giants 20
