As much as anything in politics can be set in stone — South Ward Councilwoman Jenna Figueroa Kettenburg appeared ready to become president of Trenton City Council. At-large Councilwoman Jasi Edwards allegedly had promised a key vote of support for Figueroa Kettenburg just hours before Thursday night’s critical vote. Yet, when City Clerk Brandon Garcia roll-called the vote to confirm Figueroa Kettenburg, Edwards balked then abstained. Seated President Crystal Feliciano and North Ward Councilwoman Jennifer Williams supported Figueroa Kettenburg. Other dominoes tipped against her as West Ward Councilwoman Teska Frisby, South Ward Councilman Joe Harrison, and At-large Councilwoman Yazminelly Gonzalez voted no. In what seemed more like the political version of “Survivor” or “Game of Thrones” seekers, Gonzalez eventually received a unanimous vote to hold the coveted president seat and Edwards replaced Figueroa Kettenburg as vice-president. A 7-0 confirmation decision for Gonzalez, more a needless act of solidarity, ended the process. Figueroa-Kettenburg, for her part, handled disappointment admirably, although observers in City Council Chambers or those watching on Internet sites, could touch her disenchantment. “I was clearly blindsided by Jasi,” Figueroa Kettenburg, leaving all other questions for Edwards, admitted. Council rules afforded the South Ward representative a kind of first-dibs at gaining the presidency. Her inability to gain the necessary support allowed for a Gonzalez nomination. Edwards earlier in the day said she was in a meeting and would make contact later. No contact occurred.
