Smoking materials spark house fire in Portsmouth, one in critical condition

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) -- One person is in critical condition following a house fire in Portsmouth early Saturday morning.
At approximately 6:10 a.m., fire crews responded to a house fire in the 700 block of Broad Street, next door to the Portsmouth Fire Station. Firefighters immediately entered the home and rescued a man and woman.
Medical crews transported both victims to Norfolk General.
Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire.
A preliminary investigation determined that smoking materials came in contact with home furnishings, causing the fire.
It is unclear how many people have been displaced, or which individual is in critical condition. The investigation is ongoing.
